This past weekend the London Devilettes Junior Hockey Team participated in the Stoney Creek University Showcase Tournament. A total of 64 teams (8 Divisions of 8 teams) participated in the preeminent girls hockey tournament. In Round Robin play, the Juniors sported a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, defeating Assabet Valley (ranked#19 in the US) 3-0, Notre Dame 6-2, and the Pacific Steelers 3-2. Their only loss was to Detroit Belle Tire (US ranking #9) 1-0 in a tight, physical contest.
With only the first place teams in each Division going to the gold medal round of 8, the Juniors were seated 15th out of the 64 teams after the round robin and advanced to the Bronze Medal Division. In the first game of the bronze medal game, they defeated Quebec’s Dawson College 2-1, who finished last year rated # 10 in Canada U20 Division. With that win, the girls moved to the Bronze Medal Championship Game against the Chicago Young Americans who finished last year as the 11th ranked team in the US. After regulation time, the score was tied 3-3. With a 5 minute sudden death overtime deciding nothing, the 2 teams were involved in a shootout where our Juniors were defeated.
The coaching staff and parents are proud of the effort our girls put forth this weekend, having only played 1 exhibition and 1 regular season game prior to attending. They showed great team chemistry in overcoming some strong teams, both physically and in terms of tempo.
