Tonight (March 29, 2018) marked our
last practice at Glen Cairn Arena, our Thursday night ice all season.
Next week, while we get ready for OWHA Provincials, the ice will come out and never go back in. The City of London has plans to close and demolish the rink after years of debate and planning.
The old arena is looking its age, but many swear it still had some of the best ice in the city.
Thousands and thousands of skate blades have hit that ice over the years - from the long-gone Southeast London Hockey Association, the spectacular George Bray Sports Association (who have called Glen Cairn home for decades), competitive leagues, house leagues, high school teams and recreational leagues. Kids learned to skate there and retirees played pick-up.... And it's served the Devilettes well.
So, farewell Glen Cairn and your wooden beams, your cold cement floors and gigantic dressing rooms (when you could get them!). To borrow from the white board tonight, “thanks for the memories.”
